Osa Mariposa Hostel

OSA MARIPOSA is a small bungalow beach hostel located in Puerto Escondido on Mexico’s Pacific Southern Shore in the magical and wondrous state of Oaxaca. Puerto Escondido is best known as home to the “Mexican Pipeline”, one of the top 10 surf breaks in the world. Surfers can find decent waves to ride here almost 365 days a year. Because of the various shapes and sizes of the beaches and breaks, both professionals and beginners feel comfortable in the water.

Not only is Puerto Escondido a major destination for water sports, but is also a great spot to stay if you want to visit any of the nearby lagoons, waterfalls, hot springs, mountains, rivers and villages that surround it.

The OSA MARIPOSA serves as an alternative oasis to travelers who want to visit the beach and enjoy a relaxed, peaceful environment without losing access to the city and all it has to offer. We are situated in a quiet, residential neighborhood made up of sandy streets, fruit trees, small shops and smiley faces. Just two blocks (100 meters) to the beach and halfway between the two best surf breaks (Zicatela and La Punta), barely a three minute walk to the highway the hotelito is well situated for many activities. Commuting to the center of town (banks, bus stations, super market) takes no more than about 7 minutes in taxi or local bus and, of course, walking along the beach is an option as well. Our neighborhood is developing rapidly. You can find various internet cafes, mini-supermarkets, restaurants, diners, yoga classes, surf shops, movies and more.

Within the OSA MARIPOSA guests have access to showers and bathrooms that are always clean and spacious. Our tropical garden is both beautiful and functional. Mango, orange, lime, banana, coconut, star fruit, and almond trees are mixed in with sugar cane, pineapple, lemon grass, mint, basil and much more. We serve delicious vegetarian soul food for breakfast, lunch and dinner made from local ingredients at affordable rates accompanied with fresh fruit juices, rich Oaxacan coffee and a variety of teas. The OSA bar is loaded with an assortment of MEZCAL flavors and cocktails. (Mezcal is a Mexican artisan alcohol similar to tequila, but of an older distillation process still not industrialized. Oaxaca is the most important producing state.) Of course we also provide a selection of beer and wine. The nucleus of the hotel is the common area where guests can congregate to eat, drink, converse or play games. There are plenty of comfy chairs and hammocks, board games and a growing book exchange. Our little library has lots of information on travel in Oaxaca and our staff is always happy to help with whatever questions or concerns you may have.

At maximum capacity we can accommodate 32 people between our private bungalows (queen or separate single beds) and our shared dormitories for backpackers and budget travelers (4 beds per cabin). Taxi service is available to and from the OSA MARIPOSA. We have send-out laundry service and can exchange some foreign currency. There is staff present 24 hours a day and 24 hour access in and out of the hostel.
