ISC Youth Hostel Job Functions: Customer Service; Administrative; Accounting & Finance; communications; social media

Job Description: Work as a live-in front desk staff member at the International Student Center, one of the historical youth hostels in Manhattan. Located in a beautiful residential neighborhood on the upper west side of Manhattan, the International Student Center youth hostel is a not for profit educational organization with several programs at the location, including the Arts for PEACE program, besides the youth hostel. Meet and interact with participants from around the world and learn about working with a not for profit organization in the context of experiential education and cross cultural exchange.

Front Desk staff work approximately 35 - 40 hours each week assisting with:
• Phone reception for the International Student Center, and the Arts for PEACE program.
• Guest check-in and check-out for the youth hostel
• Management of reservations and accounting for the youth hostel
• Offering NYC tourist and local information, besides providing info about cultural and educational events at the Center
• Nurturing the community here at the center.
• Assisting with administrative tasks with the two main educational programs of the organization [Arts for PEACE; and International Student Center], besides any new initiatives that may be launched.
• Conducting weekly marketing and social media research for the ISC and AFP programs
• Organize at least one or two special events every month for the ISC and AFP programs

In addition to front desk duties, Front Desk Staff attend staff meetings and are encouraged to collaborate with other staff members on any projects or “extracurricular” activities that may benefit the youth hostel. These projects may include planning special events, publicity and advertising; organize cultural or educational activities for guests, or any other ideas developed by the Student Center staff team.

• $540 per 40 hour work week, normally based on eight hour five-day work week [2 days off]

Qualifications: We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who is open-minded and has the ability to multi-task, working alongside a small staff team. University educational experience with a Graduate or Under Graduate Degree; and relevant work experience in community organizations are valuable. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a commitment to cross cultural exchange and nurturing friendships between different cultures. Volunteer experiences will be considered a big plus! Commitment to customer service and guest hospitality. Knowledge and understanding of the nonprofit sector. Fluency in spoken English and proficiency in written English is essential. Experience as an international traveler; and, or, experience in a work abroad / study abroad experience is preferred. Familiarity with MS office applications: Word; Excel; and Outlook is a must. Proficiency in at least one additional language is highly desirable. Staff are required to reside / live at the International Student Center in Manhattan in a dormitory-styled youth hostel accommodation.
