Work/Stay Opportunity in Small, Relaxing Hostel in the American Southwest

Become a Work-Exchange Volunteer

The Phoenix Hostel & Cultural Center is located in downtown Phoenix, in the trendy Roosevelt Row Arts District, and only 1 km from the lightrail tram system. Our location is within walking distance to public transport, grocery stores, sports arenas, concert venues, galleries, museums, bars, clubs, and cafes.

We are surrounded my mountains and stunning desert landscapes. Hiking opportunities and scenic drives are in every direction. Phoenix is called the Valley of the Sun for good reason. It averages 299 days of sunshine per year!

We offer a unique work-exchange program for students, young people, and travelers to stay in Phoenix for an extended period while also volunteering at the hostel.

We look for a candidate that truly fits with the Phoenix Hostel environment and will consistently contribute to our reputation for being friendly, welcoming and helpful. In other words, we want volunteers who thrive on being social with our domestic and international guests and who will provide exceptional customer service. We also require volunteers be considerate, responsible, clean, proactive, and overall just have a positive, willing and hardworking attitude.

 The Work:

All volunteers help out for 20-25 hours per week. You will be scheduled primarily for breakfast and cleaning shifts. Volunteers also help with yard work, deep cleaning, and special projects. The scheduled hours are 4-5 hours per day, 5 days per week. This schedule allows you to finish in the early afternoon with the rest of the day open to explore Phoenix!

Ideally, volunteers will stay with us for anywhere from 4 to 12  weeks.

Volunteers who can commit to stay at least 1 to 2 months will be assigned to morning breakfast and cleaning duties.

Volunteers who can commit to 3 months and are fluent in English may be assigned to reception duties as well, if there is a need. Our reception desk is open 9am-10am and 4:30pm-10pm.

The Perks:

In exchange for this help, volunteers get a bed in a staff room and free access to our guest breakfast, kitchen, wifi, laundry, and shared staff bicycles. We encourage volunteers to use their 2-3 days off each week to explore Phoenix and the American Southwest. Through our partnership with Hostel International, we may be able to get you a free night or two at a sister hostel, after you’ve volunteered with us for at least one month. And, of course, volunteers get the chance to connect with interesting travelers from all over the world!

 Hostel Atmosphere:

We promote a friendly, welcoming, low-key atmosphere where guests can relax, talk, make travel plans with new friends, share a meal or even have an impromptu jam session with our assortment of instruments. To encourage guest interaction, we also host movie nights, dinner nights/BBQs, make s’mores over the fire pit, etc.

Check out our website (phxhostel.org), our Facebook page (facebook.com/phxhostel) and our Instagram feed (hi_phxhostel) to see who we are and what we’re about!

The Small Print:

All volunteers must complete a one-week trial period to start. Please note -- We have a limited alcohol policy at the hostel and staff should always behave in accordance with that policy.

Think you have what it takes to join the Phoenix Hostel Team? We would love to hear from you. Fill out the form on our website to begin the application process. You'll find the form under the Work With Us tab. We also like to do a quick video chat with prospective volunteers through WhatsApp to make sure we both feel like it’s a good fit before committing!
