Hostel Manager – Harpers Ferry Hostel: Knoxville, MD

The Potomac Area Council of HI-USA, a nonprofit organization, is seeking an experienced manager to manage the Harpers Ferry Hostel located in Knoxville, MD. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and energetic manager to grow the well established HI-Harpers Ferry hostel. There are lots of opportunities for creative utilization of the property including off season activity, hostel events, group outings, and the promotion of the Hostelling International Mission: ‘To help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling.’

The Harpers Ferry Hostel is a seasonal 36-bed hostel and camp grounds located in Knoxville, MD overlooking the Potomac River. The hostel is open from March 15th to November 15th. The hostel is a short 2 mile distance from historic Harpers Ferry and is just up the hill from the C&O path and Appalachian Trail. This is a rural hostel with both camping and inside dormitory facilities. We welcome many groups including boy scouts and girl scouts as well as bike riders, trail hikers, and individual or family travelers. HI-Harpers Ferry is owned and operated by the Potomac Area Council of HI USA, with additional hostels in Baltimore City, Washington DC, and the future possibility of Richmond, VA.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee all aspects of hostel operation, including day to day operation.
• Provide high quality guest service, ensuring a safe, clean, and a welcome atmosphere.
• Perform or supervise the maintenance and upkeep of hostel building, equipment, grounds, furnishings, and fixtures.
• Perform or supervise minor repairs and maintenance as needed.
• Oversee reservations, including organizing and processing group reservations, taking individual and group reservations by telephone, e-mail and online system.
• Fulfill requirements of HI-USA Quality Standards, and all health and safety regulations.
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate all volunteer and paid staff, and contract labor.
• Represent and promote Hostelling International - USA and the hostel in a positive manner to guests, callers, local officials, neighbors, media, and the general public.
• Assist in the planning and implementation of special events and fundraising.
• Promote the hostel through local marketing, such as distribution of brochures.
• Maintain, and seek out new, local discounts with local retailers, restaurants and recreational activities.
• Manage all fiscal aspects of operations.
• Develop short and long range operational plans and budgets.
• Produce monthly and quarterly reports.
• Maintain a written log including time worked, activities, incidents, and recommendations.
• Provide on-call assistance in emergencies anytime while on hostel premises.
• Other duties as assigned by Potomac Area Council.

Qualifications

Required:

• Enthusiasm and resourcefulness to take on this challenging and rewarding position.
• Prior experience working in the hospitality industry (hostel or hotel preferred).
• Customer service experience and enjoy working with the public.
• Skill in financial management and budget development, accurate, neat and thorough record keeping
• Strong background in facility management and varied maintenance skills.
• Conflict resolution skills and ability to act effectively in a crisis
• Demonstrated public relations and excellent customer service skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, and organizational skills.
• Must be flexible regarding work schedule: willing to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
• Knowledge of hostelling and previous hostelling experience essential.
• Ability to work effectively without immediate supervision.
• Computer skills (Internet proficiency, Windows OS, Microsoft office, (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Experience handling cash and recording sales transactions.
• Interest in one or more of the following: hiking, biking, civil war history, gardening, camping, the Appalachian Trail, environmentalism, sustainable living.

Desired:

• Basic First Aid and CPR certification.
• Additional experience in one or more of the following areas: cleaning, building, maintenance, bookkeeping, reservations, and/or supplies purchasing and stocking.
• Life/work experience a plus.
• Experience with website management highly desirable.
• Knowledge of other languages.
• Experience working with the ASSD reservation system.

Salary & Benefits:
Competitive salary commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, seasonal position lasting until November 15th of 2009. The 2010 season will begin in May and end in September. Part time opportunities are available during the off season (October to April). Housing is available and inclusive in season. Benefits include the possibility of vacation and sick leave, and a comprehensive health insurance package. Also includes travel benefits.
