We are currently accepting applications for a full-time Hostel Assistant. This live-in position provides on-site housing and is a fantastic opportunity to work in a beautiful and unique location. The Hostel Assistant is a multifaceted role that provides general assistance around the hostel by working at the front desk, performing housekeeping duties, and assisting with facility and grounds maintenance.

Position Details:

Pay: $16.50-16.83 per hour
Type: Full-time, benefits eligible
Shift: 4 days/week, Flexibility required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays

Responsibilities:

- Perform housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, and groundskeeping duties as needed
- Welcome, register, orient, and supervise guests; provide group orientations in a friendly manner
- Take individual and group reservations via telephone, email, or online system efficiently
- Respond to and resolve guest inquiries, issues, and concerns
- Encourage and collect guest feedback
- Ensure security and safety of the hostel, property, guests, and employees by following hostel procedures
- Promote HI USA’s mission: “To help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people, through hostelling”
- Represent HI USA, California State Parks, and the USCG positively to guests, callers, and local officials
- Provide information on HI USA, the hostel, and the local area to guests and visitors
- Assist in planning and implementing special events and gatherings
- Other duties as assigned by the Hostel Manager

Skills/Qualifications:

- Must be authorized to work in United States
- High school diploma or GED
- Customer service experience and experience handling cash and recording sales transactions preferred
- Enjoy working with the public and have the ability to handle conflict, guest issues, or emergencies calmly and professionally
- Excellent oral communication, organizational skills, and computer literacy (WINXP, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook preferred)
- Ability to work independently, multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and as part of a larger team
- Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
- First Aid and CPR certification preferred (training can be provided)
- Hostelling experience and ability to speak a second language a plus

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

- Regularly required to sit and use hands and arms
- Frequently required to stand, walk, talk, and hear
- Occasionally required to climb or balance
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required: close and peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
- Ability to move a 50-pound hot tub cover
