Hitchhike Backpackers is a brand new budget accommodation located in a quiet yet perfectly sited location in Colombo. As a family run hostel our aim is to deliver clean, comfortable and safe accommodation whilst also giving you tips and tricks to explore the very best of Sri Lanka!
Detailed Description
As a family with a wealth of travelling experience we identified the need for a genuine backpackers hostel in Colombo, one that fulfils the main things we wanted when we travelled, a place that was clean, comfortable, safe and not to forget, cheap!
There are a variety of dorms and privates rooms, shared bathroom facilities, kitchen facilities and lounge area for you to chill and relax. Bed linen is provided.
A member of staff is available 24 hours. We have numerous resources, hints and tips for you to enjoy all the beauties of Sri Lanka. Feel free to ask for any help. We are still working on WiFi. There are computers to use and a nearby internet cafe.
Dorms and rooms have lockers which you can secure using your own padlocks. There is no bar so bring your own! Feel free to have some beers (or arrack) in the lounge or even the roof top!
Make sure you look out for Pappa Fernando, he's looks like an orang-utan and is the boss of the family. Catch him for a whiskey!
Location/Area
Mount Lavinia is a quiet, safe and liberal district in Colombo, it's beach, the 'Golden Mile' is one of Sri Lanka's best, it offers great restaurants, laid back night life and is towered by the imperialist Mount Lavinia Hotel.
Colombo city centre is conveniently located 15 minutes in a bus or tuk tuk, go for another five minutes to the main train and bus station in Petta. Bus routes are available only 2 minutes away from Hitchhike and can take you directly to various part of Sri Lanka!
Directions
Finding Hitchike. The main aim is getting to the Templer's Road junction (junction is 'hund-thee-ya' in Sinhala)which is off Galle Road in Mount Lavinia. Galle Road spans the entire south of Sri Lanka so be exact!
From Templers Road /Galle Road Junction - Turn onto Templer's Road. Travel 150ft down the road to find a private road named 'Colonne Place' on the right. Hitchhike is at the end of this.
From Airport - Colombo 'Bandaranaike' Airport is irritatingly far north of the city centre and making this journey by public transport can be a nuisance. The best way is to take a private taxi to Mt Lavinia which costs 3480 rupees normal rate (400 rupees more for air conditioning; rates may change). A shuttle bus operates every 15 minutes to the main bus station in Pettah. Local buses are also available but tourists are not advised to take this.
From Pettah main bus and train station - Take the number 2 bus which goes south on Galle Road. You will need to get off at the Templers Road Junction as above. This junction is after the Dehiwala district (NB In Sri Lanka on shop boards it often says which district they are in, so use this as a clue). The bus costs approximately 30 rupees. Separate AC buses can also be taken which may cost as much as 200 rupees. All prices may change.
From the south (Galle) - If coming up the Galle Road once again, get off at the Templer's Road Junction. This junction is after Ratmalana District.
