Traditional Hostel
We are travelers ourselves. We think that touring the Globe is fun and broadens your horizons. On our journeys we also stay in hostels, hang out with like-minded travelers and try to experience as much as possible for the lowest price. Our concept is simple: we have tried to bring what we have experienced and liked in our travels to one spot, our Caveland. Our hostel is located in an old 18th century winery at the heart of the most photogenic island in Greece, Santorini.
Caveland is a complex of cave houses and terraces with amazing views and small gardens with lemon, pomegranate, orange, pear, vanilla and pistachio trees. You can choose from a wide range of accommodation options – we have dormitory style bunk beds, single beds and private double rooms. The decor is largely home-spun, in refurbishing the walls we have used many types of local techniques and the rooms are furnished with refurbished antique and local furniture.
The caves themselves represent the most typical traditional Santorinian architecture. Locals simply used to dig their houses -the caves (grotto)- into 3600 year old volcanic pumice. Pumice is the upper layer of Santorini island. This layer is about 20 meters deep, it has bright color and covers around 90% of the island and was created through various volcanic eruptions over time
In the late 18th century, this complex was used as a winery. The island of Santorini has a long standing tradition in cultivating wine and this was one of the many places used for making and storing it. In 1984 a local entrepreneur decided to turn it into a hotel. At that time the tourism on the island was just awakening and this hotel was one of the very first resorts here. At that time it was called Tennis club because of the 2 professional tennis courts designed by the tennis company Wilson. Lucas used to be a sportsman and tennis was his hobby. He simply wanted to have a place where he and his friends could play. Besides tennis he also liked swimming and that’s why he built up the pool that was at that time the second largest on the island.
Caveland’s first season as a hostel was the summer 2011. We offer an accommodation in the rooms that were all completely renovated in shabby-chic style. To cater to the needs of today’s modern travelers and backpackers, we also offer the following services and facilities:
Free wireless internet.
Free continental breakfast.
Free parking at the entrance to the properly.
Wheelchair access to some of the caves.
Options to rent a beach towel, hair dryer and a security safe.
Free luggage storage on your arrival or before your departure.
Reception desk with an option to book excursions, rent vehicles or sign up for in-house activities (yoga, barbecues, dinners).
Vending machines with drinks and snacks.
Laundry service.
Donation based coffee-bar and book swamp.
